The robin was considered a bearer of the sun by the ancient Celtic tribes of Europe.
For Christians the robin is connected to the crucifixion. As Jesus was upon the cross the robin felt his agony and went to pull a thorn from the crown to alleviate his suffering and its breast was sprinkled with drops of his blood. A survey conducted by The Times in 1960 named the robin as the most popular bird in Britain.
