„moin“
In the north, people don’t greet each other with a simple “hello”.
In the north they say “moin”

This warm, short greeting is used at all hours of the day and night, which can cause confusion.
So, just to explain: “moin” does not mean “morning”, but is an expression of the North German warm-heartedness.
The greeting “moin” originally comes from Low German. It is derived from the Low German, Dutch word moi, which means “pleasant, good, beautiful”.

The Duden has also adopted this explanation and is of the opinion that “moin” comes from East Frisia.
Incidentally, “moin” was already included in the dictionary in the 1980s and is therefore a generally accepted greeting throughout Germany.
So if a frog croaks at you with a friendly “moin” he means it warmly!
